Flexible Printed Circuit Boards (FPCB), also known as flex boards or FPC, are similar to rigid Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) but are designed to be thin, flexible, and bendable. They have copper foil circuits for electronic signal transmission, with the main difference being the base material. PCBs are rigid like glass, while FPCs are flexible like paper.
Characteristics of FPC?
- FPC is thin, flexible, and easy to bend, making it ideal for products with limited space where rigid PCBs cannot fit.
- Flexible boards are used for interconnection between stacked PCBs, saving space and materials.
- FPCs can connect distant PCBs for signal transmission and can intersect at different angles.
However, designing complex circuits or soldering precision components on FPCs can be challenging due to:
- Solder cracking on bendable FPCs.
- Less resistance to high temperatures, leading to warping.
- Precision issues with solder mask openings on PI film.
- Limitations in designing multi-layer copper foil circuits.
Despite these challenges, some applications like digital cameras successfully solder precision components onto FPCs by adding rigid stiffeners for support.
