Addressing PCB Open Circuit Issues: Causes and Solutions

PCB open circuits and short circuits are common challenges faced by manufacturers, impacting production and quality management. These issues often arise from supply chain disruptions, delivery delays, and customer concerns. Drawing from a decade of experience in PCB manufacturing, with a focus on production and quality control, I offer insights to tackle and enhance practices in addressing open and short circuit problems on PCBs.

Main Causes of PCB Open Circuits:

  • Exposed substrate leading to open circuits:
    • Copper clad laminate scratches pre-warehouse entry.
    • Scratching during the cutting process.
    • Drill tip damage to the laminate during drilling.
    • Transfer process scratches.
    • Improper operation causing copper foil scratching during stacking.
    • Production board copper foil scratching during leveling machine use.

Suggested Improvement Methods:

  • Inspect copper clad laminates upon arrival to identify and rectify scratches or exposed base material. Collaborate with suppliers for necessary actions.
  • Maintain a clean cutting machine table free from sharp objects that could scratch copper foil. Regularly clean and upkeep the cutting machine.
  • Check and replace worn spindle clamp nozzles to prevent debris interference during drilling. Adhere to chuck cleaning regulations.
  • Avoid dragging or carrying multiple boards simultaneously during transfers to prevent scratching. Organize boards neatly to minimize friction.
  • Handle stacked boards carefully post-copper sinking and plating to prevent scratches. Monitor weight and placement to prevent damage.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain leveling machine components like plate grinder baffles and drive shafts to prevent production board scratching during leveling.

By focusing on these critical areas and implementing the recommended strategies, we can mitigate open circuit occurrences on PCBs, thereby improving overall production and quality management practices in the industry.
