Note: The MNT Reform is currently in the crowdfunding phase on Crowd Supply. If you’re interested in this open-source DIY laptop, you can pre-order it. Once crowdfunding is complete, Wellcircuits, as a partner of Crowd Supply, will manufacture and assemble the motherboard, keyboard, and trackpad/trackball.

The latest version of the MNT Reform has undergone numerous improvements, making it the most user-friendly open-source DIY laptop for hacking, customization, and privacy.

The MNT Reform consists of eight 3D-printed parts designed for easy customization, repair, and longevity. Its robust aluminum case and long-lasting, user-replaceable battery ensure durability. Nearly all firmware, hardware, and software are open source, with the exception of a small portion of non-ARM firmware during bootup. There are no binary blobs in use.

The Nitrogen8M SOM module was selected for the Reform, as it is the only module that provides complete schematics for users to review. The module connects to the motherboard via a 200-pin SO-DIMM connector, enabling users to design their own replacement SoM, potentially using different CPUs or even an FPGA.

The MNT Reform emphasizes user privacy. It does not include microphones or cameras by default, and Wi-Fi is provided via a removable PCIe card. You can install your operating system or sensitive data on an SD card, which can be easily removed before traveling. Full-disk encryption is straightforward with LUKS, and the system is free of management engines or remote control features that could compromise your security.

Unlike trends that prioritize thinner devices at the expense of typing comfort, the MNT Reform features a mechanical keyboard with a direct connection to the system controller, allowing you to use it even when bypassing the main processor.

The laptop also includes a 5-button trackball, offering a more intuitive navigation experience than a traditional trackpad. This setup eliminates the need to worry about middle-click functionality or scrolling (simply hold the left or right button and roll the ball). For those who prefer a trackpad, it can be selected as an interchangeable option.

A 128×32 pixel OLED display sits above the keyboard, providing vital system information, such as battery health, even when no desktop operating system is running.

When not plugged into a wall adapter, the MNT Reform is powered by 8x 18650 LiFePO4 battery cells, each with a nominal voltage of 3.2V. These cells are linked in series, providing an operating voltage of 28.8V. This configuration allows individual monitoring and balancing of each cell. Replacement cells are affordable at around 2.50 EUR each.
