Understanding PCB Copper Layer Thickness

Recently, there has been a growing concern among PCB enthusiasts regarding the accuracy of copper layer thickness in their ordered PCBs. A user shared their experience where the traces on the PCB were breaking, leading them to question the actual thickness of the copper layer.

After encountering issues, the user resorted to measuring the copper layer’s thickness themselves by removing the solder stop mask. In the process, they discovered a thickness of about 80um, raising doubts about whether the manufacturer had used the specified 105um copper thickness or opted for 70um instead.

It’s crucial to ensure the copper layer thickness meets the required specifications to guarantee the PCB’s performance and durability.
